Celebrated each March, Women’s History Month recognizes the vital role of women in American history. In 1978, the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women in California started a local Women's History Week celebration, which led to President Jimmy Carter’s first presidential proclamation for National Women's History Week in 1980. In 1987, Congress passed a resolution extending the observance to reflect a monthlong celebration. At BCLS, we recognize the contributions, strength and courage of women throughout history who fought for women’s rights and invite you to explore our collection of books, audiobooks and films.
